Welcome back! In our latest blog park series, we’re highlighting each of the parks throughout River Islands. Today, we’re continuing the adventure with a spotlight on the very special “Michael Vega Memorial Park”. We’d like to encourage all of our River Islands residents to get out and explore our many parks within the community and find out which is your favorite park!
Did you know a large part of the River Islands community has been set aside for active and passive play areas, waterways, lakes, and open space? Outdoor living truly is part of everyday life here at River Islands. The community has been designed to encourage walking and physical activity for our residents with extensive parks, trails, and neighborhood recreational amenities. With 18 miles planned for riverfront trails for bicycling and pedestrian use, there’s plenty of space to get outside and enjoy nature right in your own backyard. Our almost 5,000 acres have been designed to bring together all of the best elements of the relaxed Delta lifestyle with a vision that is decidedly green, healthy, high tech, and most importantly, in harmony with nature. There’s definitely a reason we’re known as the “Home of the 7 Day Weekend” with all of the amenities offered right here at home in River Islands!
You can find Michael Vega Memorial Park off of Lakeside Drive, nestled adjacent to our favorite community restaurant, The Boathouse. Michael Vega Memorial Park calls the beautiful Sunset Lake home, with a gorgeous lakeside backdrop that is truly like no other.
Michael Vega Memorial Park is a very special place for our community, as it’s dedicated to the memory of one of Lathrop’s very own fallen soldiers in the war in Afghanistan. Army 1st Lt. Michael Vega was a Lathrop native who died in service to his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. We’re honored to keep his memory alive with this memorial park in his name.
This peaceful outdoor space is most popular with our residents for both picnicking and recreational family fun. The park also features play structures for our littlest River Islanders too. Fun Fact: This park was actually River Islands’ very first recreational facility to the area! It includes opportunities for multi-generational activities with flexible arrival plazas, plenty of space for parking, a large great lawn for a fun game of catch with the little ones, playgrounds for hours of fun, seating along the water to relax, and a picnic grove to grab lunch with the family. This park is sure to keep everyone satisfied whether you’re looking to relax by the water with a good book or run around the play gyms with the kiddos.
